Penelope Aitken
Painting, Installation
Montmorency
Penelope Aitken makes paintings and installations that reflect on the impermanence of living things; on reincarnation, rust, decay and new life. Her works are also informed by history, religion, botany, taxonomy and poetry. Aitken has held regular solo exhibitions since 1995, including shows in public and commercial galleries, artist-run spaces, outdoor projects and festivals throughout Australia as well as Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and Cyprus.
The studio she shares with Michael Mark on Wurundjeri Country in Montmorency is made from the earth of its own excavation, recycled fence palings, bricks, bluestone and a lot of help from friends.
